Missed us? We’re back! We took a bit of a hiatus from blogging due to so many FREE food related events happening this past week that we wanted to highlight in our blog, as well as Ashley having gone back to her hometown. However, if you’re like us and your budget gets super tight at the end of the month, here are some great ways to take advantage of free and delicious food!
This past Tuesday, Laura was very fortunate to get invited to her first ever Yelp event! If you are not familiar with Yelp, it is a wonderful app that tells you about all the restaurants in your surrounding location. When you sign up for an account, you can rate restaurants and other businesses you visit, as well as write reviews. The more reviews you write and the more pictures of your food you post with your reviews, the better! Eventually you will be granted a Yelp “elite” status and will be invited to come to events that typically feature lots of free food and drinks! Neither of us are quite Yelp elite, since we are both brand new to the food blogging scene, but occasionally even brand new yelpers can get invited to Yelp events!
The event that Laura attended was called “CYE: Frose and Photography.” It was part of a month long series of events called “Charleston Yelp Extravaganza”. It was located at a store on King Street that recently opened called “Skinny Dip”, that not only is a clothing store, but also has a bar located on the second floor that offers Frose, wine, beer, and light snacks. This event was definitely a great way to end a long work day. After walking through the door, Laura was given a free cup of the most delicious and refreshing Frose (frozen Rose wine – it’s all the rage in Charleston right now!). She was then greeted by fellow food blogger, Sydney Gallimore from one of our favorite Charleston food blogs, Queen of the Food Age (check them out!), and was offered some free charcuterie. She also learned how to take high quality food pictures using an app called “Foodie”. If you like free events that often feature free food, you should definitely consider signing up for a Yelp account and start reviewing as many restaurants and other businesses as you can!
The free fun continued on Thursday night when Laura and Ashley attended another event at the same location (Skinny Dip). This event was called “The Ultimate Girls Night Out”. This event featured free hair braiding by a local Blowdry bar, free manicures, and free mini desserts from Carmella’s Dessert bar, as well as free pimento cheese biscuits from Callie’s Hot Little Biscuits. Unfortunately by the time Laura arrived, they had run out of biscuits, but they had plenty of desserts left! Nothing wrong with having dessert for dinner, right?? Though this event was pretty crowded and we had to wait in a pretty hefty line to get our hair braided, we walked out of the event feeling more beautiful than ever and also quite well nourished by the all the delicious dessert samples we had! There were trays filled with creme puffs and bite-sized fruit pies, as well as free cups of champagne on a table by the front door, and as you continued on through the store, there was also a tray filled with small chocolate eclairs! Everything was delicious and it was truly the perfect girls night out. Kudos to Skinny Dip for offering such amazing free events this week-we will definitely be coming to the next one!
Finally, on Saturday we enjoyed free Margherita pizzas in celebration of the grand opening of MidiCi pizza, located in Mount Pleasant! Though we had to wait in a bit of a line, it was well worth the wait. The restaurant itself was beautiful, we could see the pizzas being made right in front of us, and the ingredients they used looked so beautiful and fresh. The pizza crust was soft and chewy, the sauce had the perfect balance of sweetness and tang, and it had the perfect amount of cheese and fresh basil. We paired our free pizzas with Peroni beers, which we got for a super affordable price of $4.50! We highly suggest keeping your eyes peeled for brand new restaurants popping up around Charleston, because it’s not unusual for there to be free food being offered for opening weekends! We took a good look at the menu as well, and noticed that it was a very expansive menu offering a wide variety of appetizers, entrees, and desserts at a very affordable price. One margherita pizza is only $7.50-such a steal! We will definitely be coming back for more!
